Pastro — Smart Flock Monitor

A zero-maintenance IoT solution for sheep farming. Pastro harvests energy from the animal’s movement — no batteries to replace, ever. Precision livestock monitoring that finally makes economic sense.

Built for flock economics

Cattle monitors assume €1,500–2,000 animals. Sheep are worth €200–350 each but come in flocks 5–10× larger. Pastro is engineered for that maths — not adapted from cattle gear.

The problem

Existing IoT solutions fail sheep-farming economics. Cattle monitoring is a mature €200M+ market; sheep have been priced out of it.

  • Devices cost €50–200 — that’s 14–100% of a sheep’s value, versus 5–10% for cattle.
  • Battery replacement for 500 devices means 40+ hours of labour and €1,000–2,500 every year.
  • 10-year total cost of €80–250 per device — 23–125% of the animal’s value.
  • The result: precision monitoring has been economically impossible at flock scale.

The breakthrough

Pastro eliminates batteries with energy harvesting. With zero maintenance over 10+ years, precision livestock management becomes viable for Europe’s 57 million sheep — and 1.27 billion worldwide.

Several times lower total cost of ownership than battery-powered rivals or adapted cattle solutions. No battery swaps, no gateway infrastructure, and a purchase model built for flock scale — not cattle-unit economics.

What Pastro monitors

Based on a 200-ewe flock:

Early pregnancy

2–3 weeks earlier

Detects behavioural changes ahead of traditional methods, enabling targeted scanning and lower veterinary costs.

Illness prevention

Catch it immediately

Elevated temperature and activity changes flagged at once for early treatment — cutting vet costs before problems spread.

Lameness detection

Gait analysis

Early alerts enable intervention before serious impact, preventing productivity losses across the flock.

Individual tracking

Better breeding

Historical data and trend analysis inform breeding decisions — more lambs weaned from the same flock.

How it works

No infrastructure or gateways. Pastro connects directly to the farmer’s phone over BLE 5 when animals gather. The app works offline and syncs to the cloud only when — and if — you want it to.

Ankle monitor

Energy-harvesting coil + supercapacitor (no batteries), accelerometer, temperature, and a BLE 5 radio with ~50 m range.

Farmer’s phone

iOS & Android app collects data over BLE, stores it locally, and raises health alerts — fully offline.

Optional cloud

Data warehouse for multi-device sync and advanced analytics — entirely optional.

Innovative energy harvesting

Pastro generates power from the natural swing of the animal’s leg, eliminating the biggest cost and operational barrier in livestock IoT.

Energy generation

3–7× energy surplus

Electromagnetic induction coils harvest 50–100 mWh/day from leg-swing motion; the device consumes only ~15 mWh/day. A supercapacitor replaces batteries entirely.

Sealed construction

IP68, single-piece

Molded enclosure with no seams, screws, or access panels. No battery compartment means simpler manufacturing, very low failure rates, and a 10+ year life.

Expected returns

Early modelling for a mid-size flock points to payback in months, not years — driven by productivity and avoided costs. Figures vary by flock size, region, and management practice; treat them as directional estimates, not a quote.

  • More lambs weaned from better breeding and individual tracking.
  • Less routine pregnancy scanning through earlier behavioural detection.
  • Lower veterinary spend via early illness and lameness alerts.
  • Fewer ewe losses when problems are caught sooner.
  • Tighter feed management informed by activity and health trends.
  • No annual battery labour — the device harvests its own energy.

Commercial model

No subscription fees, no gateway infrastructure, no battery maintenance. Pastro is sold as a one-time purchase — the intent is that hardware cost is the long-term cost of ownership, not a recurring bill.

Pricing depends on volume, region, and pilot scope. Get in touch for early access or a demo — we’ll share current estimates without locking you into a published list price.
