Pastro — Smart Flock Monitor
A zero-maintenance IoT solution for sheep farming. Pastro harvests its own energy from the animal's movement, so there are no batteries to replace — ever. Finally, precision livestock monitoring that makes economic sense.
The problem
Existing IoT solutions fail sheep-farming economics. Cattle monitoring is a mature €200M+ market because each animal is worth €1,500–2,000. Sheep are worth €200–350 each but come in flocks 5–10× larger — so the maths simply doesn't work.
- Devices cost €50–200 — that's 14–100% of a sheep's value, versus 5–10% for cattle.
- Battery replacement for 500 devices means 40+ hours of labour and €1,000–2,500 every year.
- 10-year total cost of €80–250 per device — 23–125% of the animal's value.
- The result: precision monitoring has been economically impossible at flock scale.
The breakthrough
Pastro eliminates batteries entirely with energy-harvesting technology. At €12 with zero maintenance over 10+ years, it makes precision livestock management viable for the 57 million sheep in Europe — and 1.27 billion worldwide.
What Pastro monitors — and why it matters
Based on a 200-ewe flock:
2–3 weeks earlier
Detects behavioural changes ahead of traditional methods (80–85% accuracy), enabling targeted scanning and ~15% lower veterinary costs.
Catch it immediately
Elevated temperature and activity changes flagged at once for early treatment — saving €500–1,000 in vet costs annually.
Gait analysis
Early alerts enable intervention before serious impact, preventing productivity losses across the flock.
Better breeding
Historical data and trend analysis inform breeding decisions — worth +38 lambs, or €3,040–4,560 in additional revenue.
How it works
No infrastructure or gateways. Pastro connects directly to the farmer's phone over BLE 5 when animals gather (evening or feeding time). The app works offline and syncs to the cloud only when — and if — you want it to.
Ankle monitor
Energy-harvesting coil + supercapacitor (no batteries), accelerometer, temperature, and a BLE 5 radio with ~50 m range.
Farmer's phone
iOS & Android app collects data over BLE, stores it locally, and raises health alerts — fully offline.
Optional cloud
Data warehouse for multi-device sync and advanced analytics — entirely optional.
Innovative energy harvesting
Pastro generates its own power from the natural movement of the animal's leg, eliminating the biggest cost and operational barrier in livestock IoT.
3–7× energy surplus
Electromagnetic induction coils harvest 50–100 mWh/day from leg-swing motion; the device consumes only ~15 mWh/day. A supercapacitor replaces batteries entirely.
IP68, single-piece
Molded enclosure with no seams, screws, or access panels. No battery compartment means simpler manufacturing, very low failure rates, and a 10+ year life.
Proven returns
For a 200-ewe flock, customers typically see payback in around six months from productivity gains alone.
- Initial investment: 200 devices @ €12–15 = €2,400–3,000.
- Productivity improvement: +38 lambs weaned = €3,040–4,560.
- Eliminated pregnancy scanning: €600–1,000 saved.
- Reduced veterinary costs: €500–1,000 saved through early intervention.
- Prevented ewe deaths: €200–700 saved.
- Better feed management: €300–600 saved.
